Altruism in Action in Riviera Nayarit
When visiting Punta Mita and Riviera Nayarit, it’s hard not to be moved by the incredible beauty of the destination but also the warmth of the wonderful people who live here. It is the kind of destination that touches your heart and stays with you, and many visitors and part-time residents like to get involved to support the community. If you are looking for ways to give back, here is information about two exceptional non-profit organizations working to benefit those living in Riviera Nayarit.
PEACE Punta de Mita
Since 2013, PEACE Punta de Mita A.C. has been creating social programs that encourage self-sufficiency and community participation using a foundation of three pillars that foster positive change: health and wellness, education, and a sense of community pride.
Here are just a few of the successful programs that PEACE oversees:
English Program. The local community asked for more support in creating opportunities to learn English, a valuable skill in a tourist-driven economy that opens the door to opportunity and higher paying jobs. The English Program is now the flagship of the PEACE organization, with over 1200 children enrolled for daily second-language education.
Champions. With a public school system that can be overburdened by large class sizes and underfunded, Champions is an afterschool academic enhancement program for high-achieving middle school students to support them in their educational goals.
Community Pride Program. This program supports community development in small areas like Punta de Mita, Higuera Blanca and Corral del Risco, with workshops, community initiatives, and conferences to encourage economic growth and a strong sense of community pride and connectivity.
Fundación Punta de Mita
Founded in December 2007, Fundación Punta de Mita is focused on assisting with sustainable community development, specifically in the areas of protecting the environment, community health, and education. They have provided the infrastructure for 11 public schools in the underserved areas of Higuera Blanca, Punta de Mita, Corral del Risco, and Emiliano Zapata, as well as funding for the Del Mar Community Center which provides workshops, classes and activities for over 1000 families. Additionally, they maintain the Municipal Sports Center which offers a variety of team sports and martial arts training.
Also, of important note are the COMPAS – Youth for the Future program which is battling the problem of low high school graduation rates because of economic factors and high teen pregnancy rates, using education, counseling, tutoring and scholarships. In great part because of this program, three local communities saw their first ever high school graduation classes in 2017. Another excellent initiative is the EcoMita Program, a multicultural approach to taking on wetland preservation, reforestation programs and beach clean-up efforts, to keep the eco-system of Punta de Mita protected for both residents and visitors.
Both PEACE Punta de Mita A.C. and Fundación Punta de Mita were absolutely essential during the health crisis of 2020, creating a food bank program providing meals for 830 families weekly and continuing with the Feeding Mita Project, which provides weekly hot meals in a fun, family-friendly environment designed to make the community come together with pride, hope and positivity.
Whether a resident or a visitor, it is easy to support these exceptional non-profit agencies in Punta Mita, which gratefully accept donations to keep their important community outreach going and have full transparency in their financial operations.
